Shore It Up heads to Siargao
A premier destination for sports and adventure tourism, Siargao has been attracting many local and foreign tourists to visit its pristine shores and engage in exciting water sports activities such as surfing. Located 800 kilometers southeast of Manila, Siargao has a population of approximately 200,000, with Surigaonon as the local dialect.
Local surfers have long been going to Siargao as its waves are ideal for surfing and other fun water sports. In fact, it has been playing host to the International Surfing Cup for the past 18 years. Now, many foreigners, particularly from the United States, Europe, and Australia have been frequenting Siargao to enjoy its beauty and exciting attractions.
However, even with all the local and foreign tourists that have been visiting Siargao, the local government is saddened that it hasn’t made much impact on its economy as tourists tend to befriend locals and usually don’t end up spending much during their stay
Thus, the LGUs of Siargao have sought help to address this dilemma in July 2010. Organizations started conducting research on the area in October 2010 and by March 2011 have come out with a renewed approach towards local tourism, which was launched in the 1st International Agri-Tourism Expo, and even won the award for “Tourism Innovation”.
Through effective Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Siargao Adventure (the renewed Siargao Island Tourism development plan) will address the various issues, limitations, and concerns of Siargao Island. Subsequently with the proactive and visionary leadership of Del Carmen Mayor Alfredo Coro II, he invited Shore It Up in 2010 by participating as one of the volunteers during an SIU weekend in Puerto Galera.
Operating based on world-class standards, efficient customer-based manpower, and delivering topnotch services, Siargao Island is standardizing its local tourism industry to offer something that both local and foreign tourists would want to spend their money on, giving Siargao’s economy that much-needed boost
Siargao It Up
Hence, Shore It Up is excited to bring its program to Siargao Island on the weekend of November 15 to 16, 2013. First order of the day will see volunteers facilitating 300 grade school students—the biggest number by far, into the Junior Environmental Scouts for a session on environmental awareness. The session, which will be held at the Surigao State College of Technology—Del Carmen SNCST Campus, will then be followed by a basic art workshop, awarding of certificates, bags and school supplies.
The second day of Siargao It Up, starts early in the morning as scuba diver volunteers troop to the waters near the town of San Benito to rescue the corals from the crown of thorns infestation and outbreak in the area.
Afterwards, Siargao It Up participants will then proceed to the marathon venue in Numancia Elementary School where the Race for the Mangroves of Del Carmen will be held.
Del Carmen Mayor Alfredo Coro II thanks the MVP Group of Companies, and of course, Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan for spearheading this effort. “The Municipality of Del Carmen believes that this partnership will start a new understanding and appreciation of the eco-tourism in the mangrove forest and in Siargao Islands. The Del Carmen Mangrove Forest is our source of food, livelihood and protection from natural disasters—is also a critical ecosystem that supports the fish stocks of Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Bohol, and Cebu.”
He adds, “Our local government’s effort to protect, preserve and proliferate the mangrove forest cover is also captured in the theme of the “Rescue. Restore. Revive” of the MPI Foundation.” Coro says that the upcoming “Siargao It Up! A half marathon for the Del Carmen Mangroves”, will not only increase awareness on the importance of the mangroves of Del Carmen but will also provide valuable economic impact to their community. “The credibility of the local government in Public-Private Partnerships will increase, paving the way for potentially new partners to help us build an ecosystem-based growth and development. It is with great honor and privilege to have the support of MVP and the MVP Group of Companies as we move towards preserving the environment and the people that serves to protect the environment of Del Carmen and Siargao Islands.”
Siargao It Up is co-presented by Philex Mining Corporation, together with official airline sponsor Cebu Pacific and its gold presenter Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation.
The project is supported by its major sponsors PLDT, SMART, PLDT Smart Foundation, One Meralco Foundation, SPi Global, with TV 5 and The Philippine STAR as its media partners and Maynilad and Nature’s Spring as it hydration partners.
